.. Hands on LEICA M9 ..
I had a chance to test new Leica M9 on New York Photo Festival. To be honest I’m not sure if I ever held Leica M in my hands before, so the reason to try was even bigger. There was contest for people who tested named “people” but I just wanted to see how it works and do couple of test shots. I’m not expert in testing cameras, I never did that too much.
I have to say I had some problems with focusing , because as you know, camera is rangefinder and you don’t look through the lens but next to it. And to help you focus you have split screen inside, as we used to have in old cameras. There is plastic thing on lens that also helps you focus faster, but I find it very unpractical. Every time I put camera on my shoulder focus changed because it touched my body, so every time I wanted to be fast or prepared with focus it was totally off when I needed. I really liked the lens angle. 35 mm is really perfect for street photography. (I’m usually using 20 mm on my camera but too wide, so 35 mm next purchase). Have to say Laica lens is really something that is sick sharp and colorful and saturated and…… perfect.
Camera with all the buttons works great as well. Buttons where you need them. They are using system hold and change as on old Canon EOS 1D, mk II. I had a little problems with camera grip. It is not the lightest camera and holding it without any special grip for your fingers is not the easiest thing. I believe that film ones are much lighter.
So that would be super short review. If you want you can download original image, with clicking on image. I was surprised that there is no metadata for aperture. But You have info that I remember from shooting it.
Small image, just to show myself with camera
First image where I was trying to see how depth of field works. It is super sharp on shoes, and everything else looks perfect, and on the edges also looks great. Probably fully opened aperture, 2.5..
I was focusing bridge and hat fully open aperture, so people in front are unsharp on purpose.
.. on this one I was trying to see how shadows in the building will look like. They look good
